When Trimming Is the Right Call
Trimming (or pruning) is the right move when the tree itself is healthy and structurally sound, but specific parts of it are a problem:
- A few dead or dying branches in an otherwise healthy canopy
- Branches growing into power lines, your roofline, or a structure
- Overgrown limbs blocking light, walkways, or driveways
- Storm-damaged branches that broke but didn't take the whole tree with them
- You want to encourage healthier future growth or improve the tree's shape
Regular trimming actually extends a tree's life and reduces the odds it becomes a removal job down the road — it's genuinely worth doing on a maintenance basis, not just when something looks obviously wrong.
When Removal Is the Right Call
Removal is the right move when the problem isn't a branch — it's the tree itself:
- Significant lean that's new or worsening
- Large cracks or splits in the trunk
- Extensive rot, hollow sections, or fungus at the base
- Dieback across most of the canopy, not just isolated branches
- Roots damaged by construction, flooding, or disease
- The tree is dead

What About a Tree That's "Half and Half"?
This is the trickiest category — a tree that's mostly healthy but has one seriously compromised limb or section. Sometimes the right call is to remove just that limb and save the tree. Sometimes the damage is close enough to the trunk, or the tree is old and stressed enough, that removal is actually the safer and more cost-effective long-term choice. This is exactly the kind of judgment call that's hard to make from a photo alone — it's worth having someone experienced take a real look.
💡 I'll never talk you into a removal you don't need. If trimming solves the problem, that's what I'll recommend — it's cheaper for you and I'd rather earn the repeat call.
Cost Difference
Trimming is almost always significantly cheaper than removal, since it's less labor and no stump or full cleanup involved. If budget is a factor and the tree is a borderline case, it's worth asking whether targeted trimming buys you more time before a full removal becomes necessary.
